The layout of courtyards in Henan shows various characteristics, which can be roughly summarized into four basic characteristics, namely quadrangles, three-dimensional courtyards, kiln houses and front and rear row houses in Dabie Mountain area. Cave dwelling is a unique residential building form formed by geography, geology, climate and other factors. It not only saves materials, but also is warm in winter and cool in summer. Brick-and-tile houses were upgraded from grey tile houses with earth walls in Henan since 1980s. This kind of building is made of blue bricks or red bricks fired from river sand and clay as the wall. The slate buildings here are also a major feature of Henan folk houses, especially the slate town in Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon, where residents are mainly distributed in mountainous areas.
