Is laser welding or integral stamping better for automobile body?

This is a misleading statement deliberately made by the automobile manufacturer in the advertisement:

Automobile body is mainly composed of about 400~600 steel or aluminum stamping parts. These stamping parts are mainly assembled by welding, and the welding method is mainly spot welding (resistance welding). What role does laser play in it?

1. Some stamping parts, such as car door inner panels, use laser tailor-welded blanks, that is, steel plates with different materials (strength) and different material thicknesses are welded together by laser welding process, and then the stamping process is carried out to form stamping parts. The main purpose of this is to save materials and omit the overlapping part of about 15mm during spot welding.

2. Both common stamping parts and stamping parts of laser tailor welded blanks are spliced into a complete body by laser welding. Compared with the traditional spot welding process, this welding method has higher strength and will not leave ugly weld pits on the surface.

Therefore, the car body is not formed by stamping as a whole, but by assembling and welding all stamping parts. The overall strength of the car body mainly depends on the car body structure and parts materials, but laser welding technology is more beautiful and stronger than spot welding, and the car body will have a certain lightweight effect.
