66 years ago, Gong Xueyuan was born in Guanghan, Sichuan Province. Like other rural children at the time, his childhood was spent with "mud". Near Gong Xueyuan's home was a century-old temple where more than a dozen statues of bodhisattvas were enshrined. He often dug mud from the paddy fields and bamboo forests near his home, and then took it to the temple to make clay figures in the likeness of the statues. In addition, he also burned those works that he thought were satisfactory to make the so-called "ceramic statues" with firewood.

Practicality

In 1958, at the age of 18, Gong Xueyuan carried 20 eggs as food and traveled alone from Guanghan to Chengdu to take the exam for the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, where an impromptu piece of artwork impressed experts who were present at the time for this "mud legged" child from the countryside. Gong Xueyuan was admitted to the Chinese Painting Department of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

After graduation, Gong Xueyuan was assigned to work at the Zitong County Cultural Center. He still insisted on pragmatic painting skills in addition to his busy work. Every time he went to the countryside to engage in rural work, he would always carry a drawing board, once there is free time to start practicing painting. He also made his own brushes and tied them to three or four pounds of heavy iron brush to practice line work.
