Introduction to intermediate ballistics

In the early days, because the theoretical basis of ballistic mechanics is beginning to develop, ballistics is limited to the mechanical category of projectile trajectory. With the development of ballistic measurement technology and basic disciplines, the content of ballistics research has gradually expanded and developed into a comprehensive discipline involving solid mechanics, gas dynamics, aerodynamics, liquid mechanics, elastic-plastic mechanics, chemical thermodynamics, combustion theory and explosion mechanics, and different branches have been formed one after another.

Since 1960s, people have been interested in muzzle airflow, which is mainly due to the development of large caliber and high muzzle velocity guns and the adoption of efficient muzzle brake, which has brought a series of problems such as muzzle flame, muzzle shock wave and noise that affect the performance of guns and endanger the safety of gunners. The solution of these problems depends on people's understanding of the nature of gas flowing objects in the bore. In the development of intermediate ballistics, the research of measurement technology and digital simulation method plays an important role.
