What is the most traditional and widely used engine arrangement?

In order to meet different use requirements, the overall structure and layout of modern cars are different. According to the different relative positions of the engine and various assemblies, the layout and driving modes of modern automobile engines usually have the following four types:

1, engine front and rear wheel drive (FR): Most trucks, some cars and some buses at home and abroad adopt this traditional drive form. It is steered by the front wheels and driven by the rear wheels. The power output by the engine is transmitted to the drive axle through the clutch-transmission-transmission shaft, where it is decelerated and twisted, and then transmitted to the rear left and right axle shafts to drive the rear wheels and make the car run. The front and rear wheels perform their respective duties, and the steering and driving are separated, so that the load distribution is relatively uniform.

2. All-wheel drive (NWD): It is a unique form of off-road vehicle. (such as BJ2020 Cherokee, etc. ). Usually, the engine is front-mounted, and a transfer case is installed behind the transmission to transmit power to each wheel respectively. Good overall driving force, strong climbing and off-road ability. However, compared with single front and rear wheel drive, it has complex structure, high cost and low transmission efficiency.

3. Front-engine front-wheel drive (FF): It is a gradually popular automobile layout form at home and abroad in 1990s. In order to shorten the length and reduce the weight of the car, the engine is often placed in front of the front axle, and everything behind the transmission moves forward. The transmission and the drive axle are integrated and fixed beside the engine, and the power is directly transmitted to the front wheels, which reduces the height of the chassis and improves the handling stability at high speed.

4. Rear engine rear wheel drive (RR): It looks like a replica of FF car, but it just moves the "internal organs" in front of the car to the back. This kind of vehicle retains the advantages of FF vehicle, but also eliminates the disadvantages of FF vehicle. Because the layout of the car tends to be reasonable, the noise and temperature in the car are improved, and it is welcomed by users with its unique structure and good performance.
