What's the difference between high-precision maps and ordinary maps?

High-precision map is an extension of ordinary navigation map, which is different from ordinary navigation map in accuracy, users, timeliness and data dimension.

(1) accuracy: the accuracy of ordinary navigation maps generally reaches the meter level; The precision of high-precision map reaches centimeter level.

(2) Users: Ordinary navigation maps are for human drivers; High-precision maps are machine-oriented.

(3) Timeliness: For static data, the update requirements of general navigation maps are generally at the monthly or quarterly level; In order to ensure the safety of autonomous driving, high-precision maps generally need to be updated weekly or daily. For dynamic data, ordinary navigation maps are not needed; High-precision maps need to update information such as lane-level road conditions or traffic events in real time.

(4) Data dimension: Ordinary navigation maps only record road grade data, such as road slope, geometry, slope, curvature and direction. On the basis of ordinary navigation maps, high-precision maps not only add attributes such as the type and width of lanes and lane lines, but also include detailed information such as guardrails, kerbs, traffic signs, signal lights and street lamps.
