Brauer was the youngest of the five masters of classic design, and in 1925, at the age of 23, he created what would become a near-household name, the Vasily Chair, which would go down in history as the first application of the new material, bent steel tubing, in home furnishings. However, throughout Brauer's long design career, new or old materials were not the main force in his designs; for him, any material in modern society, as long as it was properly understood and used wisely, would express its intrinsic value in design.　 Born in Hungary to a doctor, Brauer grew up with a love of painting and sculpture, and at the age of 18 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
