Chen Hongshou specialized in figures, birds and flowers, and landscapes, but his figure paintings had the greatest influence on later generations. He was an important painter who inherited the ancient tradition and opened a new style of modern figure painting, which played an important role in revitalizing the figure painting that had declined since the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Chen Hongshou studied under Lan Ying, Liu Zongzhou, Zhang Xingyao, Yan Liben, Wu Daozi, Zhou Fang, Li Gonglin, and Zhao Mengfu, and he was able to adapt ancient methods to form a style that was ancient and strange. The Returning to the World Scroll, created in the seventh year of the Shunzhi reign (1650), centers on the artist's values and the mentality of the relics, as well as his highly matured style of figure painting. This picture was made for Zhou Lianggong, who left the Qing Dynasty, and was intended to exhort this old friend with the story of Tao Yuanming, who resigned from his post and returned to the fields in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Chen Hongshou painted "Li Sao", "Nine Songs", "Water Margin Leaves", "The Story of the Western Chamber", "Bogu Leaves" and other embroidered illustrations, all engraved into prints by the famous workers, to Zhang publication, the development of the art of printmaking in China is of great significance. Chen Hongshou painting flowers and birds also has its own unique style, can be divided into two painting methods: one by the Song Dynasty Academy of heavy color development of brushwork, outlining fine, colorful; one by the influence of the late Ming capitals of birds and flowers, seepage of ink and water, the use of agile and spontaneous, brushwork and writing both integration.
