In 2004, China joined the Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage. On May 20, 2006, the State Council announced the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage ***5 18, including 9 traditional medicines. In June 2008, the State Council announced the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage and the first batch of national intangible cultural expansion projects, including 13 traditional medicines.

In April 2000, UNESCO initiated the application and evaluation of "representative works of intangible heritage of mankind", and announced the first batch of "representative works of oral and intangible heritage of mankind" in the world on May 1.

In 2005, state administration of traditional chinese medicine officially launched the project of applying for world-class intangible cultural heritage by traditional Chinese medicine, and in September 2007, the first batch of lists of applying for protection of world intangible cultural heritage were confirmed, including nine projects, namely, methods of recognizing life and diseases by traditional Chinese medicine, diagnostic methods of traditional Chinese medicine, processing technology of traditional Chinese medicine, preparation methods of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, bone-setting therapy of traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine culture of Tongrentang, traditional Chinese medicine culture of Huqingyutang and Tibetan medicine.
