Brief introduction to the ceremony of learning from teachers
It is a long-standing tradition of China people to respect teachers, so there was a ceremony of respecting teachers in the Zhou Dynasty. But there has been no special etiquette for learning from teachers. Confucius said, "I have never been ignorant of those who practice self-discipline." It seems that the relationship between teachers and students is relatively simple and personal. Pre-Qin philosophers gave lectures in private, which was generally the case.
After the Han dynasty, the state established schools, and the disciples of doctoral students may still follow this law, or be appointed by the state, so there will be no other ceremonies to worship teachers. In short, learning from teachers has not entered the formal etiquette system of the country, that is to say, if there is, it is a private ceremony.
"Tongdian" began to mention the teacher's ceremony. The book "Etiquette Law" in June and July emphasized that "the son of heaven worships and protects Fu", saying that the son of heaven should also worship teachers and bring them into the national code system. But it only talks about the respect of teachers by Emperor Han Chengdi and others, and does not record their etiquette, so I guess there was no such formal etiquette in ancient times.
However, since the Tongdian was specially discussed, it shows that the Tang people have attached great importance to it, and the formal ceremony of learning from teachers was established at this time. The book "Kai Yuan Li Tie, Crown Prince Bundle" records in detail the process and etiquette of the Crown Prince becoming a monk.
