Some artists specialize in one type of work. Some commercial artists work in graphic design studios, providing services for advertisers, publishers and public relations companies. Other commercial artists are freelancers, looking for their own careers. Many large advertising companies, department stores and other commercial organizations have their own art departments.
Commercial artists should have artistic talent and imagination, and be good at communication and cooperation with people. They are not only proficient in traditional art design materials and techniques, but also proficient in computer graphics technology. Commercial printing technology is equally important. Many art and design middle schools offer two to three years of study courses to train commercial artists. Universities and colleges also offer such courses.
Artists often create commercial works with real artistic value. For example, advertising posters designed by French artist Henri de Toulouse Lake are hung in museums all over the world.
