Zhuxian Town woodblock New Year pictures were born in the Tang Dynasty and began to flourish in the Song Dynasty. Due to the invention of movable type printing in the Northern Song Dynasty, the engraving printing industry was pushed to a new peak, and New Year pictures began to change from strokes to rigid printing. The sales of woodblock New Year pictures in Tokyo, the capital, are unprecedented, with printing workshops all over the capital, large and small, and even official New Year pictures workshops.
Later, at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, Jin Guo invaded, Tokyo fell, and a large number of New Year picture craftsmen ran to the south of the Yangtze River. Many Tokyo woodblock New Year pictures workshops moved to Zhuxian Town, 45 kilometers away from Tokyo, and began to reopen in Zhuxian Town. Because the rivers in Zhuxian Town extend in all directions, in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it became the commercial center of the Central Plains, and the woodblock New Year pictures also went to the whole country.
Zhuxian Town New Year pictures are different from previous hand-painted New Year pictures. It absorbs traditional painting techniques and colorful decorative techniques, and uses simple, lively and somewhat exaggerated methods to deal with the background of the picture and portray characters. Zhuxian Town's New Year pictures originated from the folk, and incorporated into the aesthetic concept and worship consciousness of national traditional culture, which mostly reflected the people's good wishes for a bumper harvest, prosperity, harmony, peace and good luck, and prosperity of six animals. Up to now, more than 220 old New Year pictures have been excavated and sorted out, and more than 300 sets of old New Year pictures have been re-made. There are more than 70 people engaged in woodblock New Year pictures printing in Zhuxian Town. While preserving the tradition, these craftsmen are also studying how to make Zhuxian Town New Year pictures more suitable for the aesthetics of the present people, so as to better continue the traditional Zhuxian Town woodblock New Year pictures.
