Why are most ghosts in China women?

In fact, there have been many female ghost images in many literary works in the past, especially Pu Songling's Liaozhai. These literati not only express their dissatisfaction with society and the present through literature, but also have some traditional Confucianism in it. Looking closely, many female ghosts in ancient literary works are images that do not conform to the traditional rules of Confucianism, and even can be said to be a break, which is also a kind of resistance expressed by many literati with the help of female ghosts.

Moreover, in the old society and feudal society, the status of women was lower than that of men. Under the big traditional framework, women can only survive if they are attached to men, which is why there are more female ghosts than men. Because many female ghost images are not enshrined, they may die or divorce because they are unmarried, and so on. Faced with the oppression of women in the patriarchal society at that time, they would resort to death to achieve these goals because of unfair treatment during their lifetime, so there are many stories of female ghosts' revenge in traditional stories.

The female characters and men in these ghost stories are redundant, which also shows the serious bondage of Confucian society to women at that time. On the other hand, from ancient times to the present, people all default that women are weak characters, and when female ghosts rebel, there is a sharp contrast, which makes the story more visible.
