Before the invention of paper, what writing materials did people use, and what were their advantages and disadvantages?
In primitive society, symbols were carved on pottery. During the Yin and Shang Dynasties, the main writing materials used by China were tortoise shells and ox bones, which needed special treatment and were carved by specialized personnel with knives. There are also inscriptions on bronzes and jade articles. During the Western Zhou Dynasty, characters were mainly cast on bronzes. During the Spring and Autumn Period, bamboo slips and wooden slips prevailed, and silk books were used. Mozi said that "the bamboo and silk of books are handed down to future generations." Until the Eastern Han Dynasty, bamboo slips and silk books were still important writing materials. At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Liu Xiang revised the imperial book and always wrote it on bamboo slips so as to change it at any time. After finishing, he copied the finalized book on silk. The books collected in Dongguan of the Royal Library of the Eastern Han Dynasty are bamboo slips and silk books.
