Ancient monks have a scar on their head, why not now?

Monks are a very special group of people, we often see a lot of monks in movies and TV dramas, for me, the most impressive is Jigong. The image of the monk in our mind should be the plain robe, holding a Buddha bead or knocking on the wooden fish, very simple. But for most people, the most impressive thing is the point on the monk's head, which in writing is called the precept scar. But nowadays monks don't have ring scars on their heads, why is that?

In the movie and television drama, we can often see the monk's head has a few small dots, generally we thought because the monk needs to point on the dot, so as to show the identity, say they have been a monk. But later learned that this dot is not painted, not printed, but with incense burning in the head scar. This kind of scar is commonly known as the precept scar, also known as the incense scar, is a distinctive outward sign of a Han Chinese Buddhist monk. It sounds and feels rather cruel, and I'm just going to ask if it doesn't hurt? But the monks have been scrambling to be the first to try to light it.

Checking for information, not every monk can have a scar. Generally, only those who are well behaved get the honor. Young monks who just enter the temple need to be shaved, that is, to have their hair shaved off, and then as they gradually excel in their performance in the temple, they may be able to get their first scar, and then there will be more after that, with the most being said to be 12. So why don't all monks have them on their heads anymore? It's actually for the sake of people's health.

Because the point of the precept scars is to use incense to burn directly, which is hurting people's head, and it is easy to swell and inflame. This behavior has seriously damaged people's health. Because of this, the directors of the Chinese Buddhist Association only agreed to abolish this practice, so now the newly initiated monks will not point the precept scars on their heads anymore, just shave off their hair.
