What are some of the differences between Chinese and Western cultures that are reflected in the movie "Pusher"? The more the merrier.
It is my impression that this movie is the earliest in Ang Lee's "Family Trilogy," and the structure of the whole story is not as delicate as the later two, with a lot of minutiae and artifice. For example, the old man lost, the son lost his temper, and the whole process of raising a daughter-in-law is indifferent, the memory of the American woman is not so unsympathetic, so that too deliberately trying to express something.
What he's trying to say is that in a family that combines the East and the West, the Chinese old man's living situation is very embarrassing, and if he doesn't have the ability to be quite independent to live in the United States, he has to be self-absorbed. Luckily, the old man in this movie knows "Tai Chi", and he knows how to overcome the strong with the soft, so the movie will have that kind of ending. Although this is a hopeless ending, it is also a reconciliation of yin and yang, that is to say, the reconciliation of Chinese and Western cultures is actually a compromise between Chinese and Western cultures.
Ann Li's movie would have been banned on the mainland. First, he surrendered Chinese culture to the West; second, he described how Chinese people in the United States denounced the mainland system; and third, he revealed the culpability of the Cultural Revolution.
With The Pusher, Ang has shown that he has an accurate grasp of both Chinese and Western cultures. The protagonist of the movie is a Chinese old man, a "martial arts expert" who loves tai chi and entertains himself with the art of Push Hands. Though living in a foreign country, the old man has not forgotten this skill, which he relies on for his livelihood. Under the constraints of traditional Chinese concepts, "filial piety" and "supporting one's children in their old age" gradually clashed with the idea of "living independently" in the United States, and little by little, the old man felt excluded from his family. Little by little, the old man felt excluded from his family, and he began to try a new life until he met his own sweetheart. He thought he could get rid of this conflict of ideas and start a new life, but unexpectedly, the traditional Chinese ideas between the old man and the old man bound them again. Neither of them breaks their own thinking, so that the old man, who is good at "pushing hands", is once again "pushed hands". Although his own child eventually merged with him again, but how long can this kind of thinking relationship remain, I think, the deep-rooted things will never change.
Taijiquan's "Push Hands" is a two-person simulated sparring exercise. The key points suggested in the boxing scripture are: "Rounding and straightening", "Surrendering oneself to others", "Left weight is left empty, right weight is right small", "No loss, no top", etc. These are the same as those of Taijiquan, which are the same as those of other styles. "etc. These are the same as our traditional Chinese thoughts. In Taiji, the emphasis is on practicing "qi", the highest state of "unity of heaven and man", and "balance" and "mediocrity". "The West is about conflict to solve problems. The West is to conflict to solve the problem, Westerners deal with the problem "Ding is Ding, D is D", not messy, step by step. The Chinese, on the other hand, are all about "through" and "change". That's part of what Ang Lee was trying to reflect in "Pusher.
In the movie, the main character, who is an old man, has even more difficulty in changing and integrating traditional Chinese ideas. The movie draws on some of the lifestyles and habits of the American family, as well as the conflict between the children and their father, to show these issues. The momentum in the pushers, which is waiting to happen, may also be a hint of Ang Lee's outburst after six years of silence.
