It is said that in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the plague was rampant in the area of Ru Nan, and epidemics were prevalent. A man named Huanjing studied with the Taoist priest Fei Changfang to learn the magic of eliminating plague and saving people's lives.

One day, Fei Changfang told Huanjing that on the ninth day of the ninth month, the plague demon again, and instructed Huanjing to go back to save the townspeople: "nine days away from home to climb the heights, put the cornelianthus into a red cloth bag, tied on the arm, drink chrysanthemum wine, that is, you can beat the plague demon". Huanjing went home and told all the villagers. September 9, the day, the Ru River surging, the plague demon, but because of the chrysanthemum wine pungent, cornelianthus incense piercing the heart, difficult to approach.

Huanjing waved his sword and cut down the plague demon at the bottom of the mountain. In the evening, people returned to their homes and saw "chickens, dogs, cows and goats dying at once", while people were saved from the plague by going out to climb the mountain.

Since then, the festival has been passed down to the present day. Over time, the feast has become a beautiful, elegant custom.
