Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese folk activity. It is said that during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and the Warring States Period, Qu Yuan, a senior official of the Chu State, committed suicide by throwing himself into the river out of hatred. The people of the Chu State were reluctant to bear the death of their virtuous minister Qu Yuan, so many people rowed boats to chase and rescue them. They scrambled to be the first, but disappeared when they chased them to Dongting Lake in Yueyang. It was for the dragon boat race. Its origin is commemorated by dragon boat racing every May 5th. They rowed dragon boats to disperse the fish in the river to prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body.
