In ancient times when there was no garbage disposal station, how did the ancients deal with garbage?
There were special garbage disposal stations in ancient times. In order to deal with garbage, a special sanitation department has also been set up. During the Zhou Dynasty, there were public toilets and special cleaners in densely populated towns. At the same time, Tang Chao has also rationally planned the drainage systems of major cities.
There were also private garbage disposal stations in the Tang Dynasty, which specialized in collecting domestic garbage or cleaning septic tanks. People in the Tang dynasty also realized that manure fermentation and garbage were also excellent farm manure, and then they transported these garbage to farmers for trading. The court benefited from this, and farmers treated garbage as agricultural fertilizer. In addition, most people will choose incineration or collective burial for garbage disposal. In ancient times, almost all garbage was treated with feces.
In the Song Dynasty, with the expansion of the city, in order to solve the problem of domestic garbage, a special "Street Department" was set up, which is also an institution with general responsibilities with the Environmental Sanitation Bureau, and hired professionals to carry out garbage cleaning activities to achieve optimal garbage disposal.
The garbage disposal capacity in ancient times was also very limited. Many dynasties moved their capitals because of the destruction of urban water resources, which also made it difficult for dynasties to survive. Moreover, many dynasties in ancient China mostly followed the Confucian and Mencius principles, and advocated that all people's behaviors should be regulated by courtesy. Therefore, the ancients naturally formed the habit of not littering and scraps of paper, and strived to keep the living environment clean and tidy, thus forming a good hygiene tradition and habit among the people.
However, in times of war, the intensity of urban garbage disposal will also decline, and the sanitary conditions will be greatly worse than before. During the war, people would directly dump their domestic garbage on the ground, which also caused frequent infectious diseases in ancient times.
(2) Develop a scientific landfill method. Ancient China people also formulated scientific landfill methods. For example, researchers discovered as early as 4000 years ago that the ancients knew the method of landfill. At that time, there were natural pits, artificial pits and some garbage ash. This proves that the ancients buried garbage naturally, or burned it before burying it.
The ancients also treated garbage by returning feces to the fields. As Jia Si recorded in Qi Shu Yao Min:
"You don't want a variety, you just need to do it well. It is better to destroy the wall with new manure in the market."
If new manure, old wall soil and plant ash are used as fertilizers to improve the soil, the fertility of the soil can be effectively increased.
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, recycling garbage formed a set of industrialization. Both industrial workers and people in the industrial chain know how to classify garbage and take what they need. So in China, garbage has also formed a fine tradition.
In fact, we should not worry too much about the garbage disposal of the ancients. Because the ancient population was small, the land was vast and sparsely populated, and many of them were virgin forests and mountains, so there was little garbage. In ancient rural areas, people usually throw kitchen waste directly into cesspits, and construction waste can be treated on the spot. Except for cities or palaces, garbage in other places is handled by individuals.
