History of the University of Cambridge
2. The University of Cambridge consists of 31 constituent colleges and 6 academic colleges. Although the University itself is public, the colleges, which enjoy a high degree of autonomy, are private institutions. They have their own management framework, admissions and student activity arrangements, and work differently from the centralized university responsible for teaching and research. The University of Cambridge is a member of a number of academic consortia, and is part of the UK's 'Golden Triangle of Universities' and the University of Cambridge Healthcare Partnership.
3. In addition to classes organized by the faculties, Cambridge students are also required to attend tutorials offered by the College. The University has eight arts and science museums, a library system with over 15 million volumes and the world's oldest university press. In addition to their studies, students can participate in various extra-curricular activities by joining clubs, societies and sports teams.
4. Cambridge alumni include many famous scientists, philosophers, politicians, economists and writers. ***Ninety-two Nobel Prize winners and four Fields Medal winners have been students, faculty, alumni or researchers at the University.
