There are several tenon-mortise structures in wooden furniture, which one is the strongest?

There are three tenon-mortise structures for wooden furniture, among which dovetail joint is the most firmly connected. Tenons and mortises are still widely used in the production of modern solid wood furniture. Its basic form is: the mortise of one part is inserted into the mortise of another part, and then the connection is formed. Among them, tenon and mortise are the most important stress and connection parts. According to the shape of mortise, mortise and tenon can be divided into right-angle tenon, dovetail tenon and round bar tenon.

The first is the right-angle mortise-tenon connection, which is the most widely used mortise-tenon connection method. Most different wooden furniture structures are connected by right-angle tenons. The second is the dovetail joint connection. The tenon is trapezoidal or semi-conical with big end and small root, and the connection is firm and tight, but it is difficult to process and install. It can be used for corner joint of box and frame parts in solid wood furniture. Dovetail joint also has many uses in high-grade antique solid wood furniture and some folk furniture.

When dovetail is engaged, the width of tenon end should be 0.5 mm wider than that of tenon end and the width of tenon root should be 0.5 mm wider than that of tenon root. Dovetail joint has the greatest bonding strength. The third type is round bar tenon joint. Its shape is cylindrical, which has the advantages of simplified processing technology, easy processing, material saving and suitable for mass production, but the strength and stability of the joint are relatively poor.

In frame structure furniture, tenons can be used for structural connection and joint, while in plate structure furniture, tenons are usually used for fixed joint and positioning between plates. The material used for tenon is usually wood with high density, straight and fine texture, no knot scar and no moth. According to the number of tenons, there are three tenons: single tenon, double tenon and multi-tenon. Among them, single tenon and double tenon are often used to join solid wood squares and furniture frames, and multiple tenons are often used to join plates.
