The entire boundary has never been officially demarcated, but a traditional customary boundary line has been formed based on the historical administrative jurisdiction of both parties. The eastern section is along the southern foothills of the Himalayas, the middle section is along the Himalayas, and the western section is along the Karakoram Mountains.
Legal basis: Article 323 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China and the People's Republic of China. Whoever intentionally damages boundary monuments, boundary stakes or permanent survey marks on the national border shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years or criminal detention.
