Yiwu Legend: Four Schools of Woodcarving Art

Sculpture has a long history. As early as the primitive society, many handicrafts began to take shape. By the Warring States period, wood carving technology had developed from simple clapper carving and engraving gravure carving in Shang Dynasty to three-dimensional circular carving technology.

? On the basis of inheriting the development of woodcarving technology in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the woodcarving technology in the Han Dynasty has greatly developed and improved.

? From the Tang and Song Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, China's woodcarving works became more and more perfect. The woodcarving art has gradually formed four schools-Dongyang woodcarving, Boxwood woodcarving, Longan woodcarving and Gold Lacquer woodcarving.

? Yiwu is adjacent to Dongyang, and the wood carving art is not only interlinked, but also basically the same. Woodcarving artists and Yiwu, Dongyang and surrounding areas flow with each other, and the art exchanges and influences each other. All of these have promoted the development of woodcarving art, and produced woodcarving works handed down from ancient times, such as Bamian Hall in Huangshan Mountain and Chen Da Flower Hall.

Wood carving, also known as wood carving, is a unique painting made by using the natural texture on the board and carving on the board. After the reform and opening up, with the development of society and the change of people's concepts, architectural sculptures and furniture sculptures have decreased. The woodcarving display crafts and woodcarving practical crafts have developed rapidly. Wood carving artists emerge one after another.

? Zhu Kuirong of Chian Town, Wu Langwen of Zhangheyong Village of Houzhai Street and Nanping Village of Wudian are representatives of many woodcarving artists.

? Zhu Kuirong loved painting since childhood. In recent years, he has created more than 100 woodcarving calligraphy and painting, including Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, Bailetu, Mao Zedong Poetry, Water Margin/General kloc-0/08, etc. During the "Cultural Fair" from April 28th to May 2nd, 2008, "Shuihu 108 River" won the "Tiangong Award" at the second national and folk arts and crafts fair in Zhejiang Province.

? When Zhang was young, he liked painting and kneading mud. The representative works of woodcarving Buddha statues are Guanyin, Harmony, etc. When I was young, I loved painting and kneading mud. His representative works of woodcarving Buddha statues are related to Gong, Guanyin, Sakyamuni Buddha, Eighteen Arhats, Eight Immortals and so on.

Wu Langwen is one of the few arts and crafts artists in Yiwu. He is good at using the natural texture on the board, using the method of description, designing beautiful wood grains on the surface when making furniture, and endowing them with vivid artistic images for decoration after careful conception and ingenious treatment.

Wood carving technology:

First, choose materials. Use wooden boards with ideal wood grain for painting (such as old camphor wood and manchurian ash). ) and skillfully using its natural texture can get twice the result with half the effort.

2. Drawing: When we choose a piece of wood, we should not rush to make it, but observe it carefully. The ever-changing wood grain gives us inspiration, like waves in the sea, like ripples in the lake, like smoke clouds, like desert wasteland ... and gives us endless imagination. Can be used as mountains, water and clouds.

Third, painting: if the woodcut knife is the "pen" of painting, then the board is the "paper" of woodcut. When you are mature, draw your ideas on the board (brush transparent paint on the board), and then you can carve them. When describing, we should emphasize the natural beauty of wood grain, and be clever in conception and application, so as to make the finishing point. Carve lines with a triangular knife, and cut outlines with a flat knife and a round knife. When carving, you should go with the flow, don't stick to the original, and have a sense of unity.

Fourth, shading dyeing: then filling with gouache. The color of woodcarving should not be too bright, too flowery or monochromatic, but should be coordinated with the wood grain. Finally, just wipe the edge of the color with a cloth. After the carving is finished, we should check whether it is in harmony so that we can finish it. This woodcut work is finished.

Tools and materials:

[1] Tools: various triangular knives, round knives, flat knives, palette and chalk are commonly used for wood carving.

② Materials: Fraxinus mandshurica plywood, camphor wood board, basswood board, gouache pigment and pigment with obvious wood grain are selected.
