Characteristics of ancient buildings in southern Fujian

The ancient buildings in southern Fujian are mainly "official buildings", so they are also called "slave palaces". In many areas, it is also called "Red Brick CuO". Shaped like a temple, it is magnificent and is a typical ancient residence in China. Its main features are: front ridge and back ridge, sitting north facing south, three-to-five-bay double protection, red brick and white stone wall, hard gable top and double upturned dovetail ridge.

From the architectural form, Minnan folk houses do not have a very flamboyant and typed form, but they have a special performance in the decoration and beautification of masonry walls. When we identify the elements of architecture, we mainly talk about them from four aspects: space, practicality, materiality and aesthetics. From the aesthetic point of view, the red brick wall in southern Fujian embodies its regional style and forms the so-called southern Fujian style. This style is formed by many factors. Although it is impossible to trace its origin now, judging from the whole architectural history of China, Minnan folk houses, especially brick masonry and wall decoration and color patterns, have their own uniqueness in the architectural history of China. Therefore, some scholars believe that the residential buildings in this area belong to the "red brick cultural area".
