Large flowers are usually solitary, multicolored, with three to five leaflets and relatively bright leaves. The plants now called "Chinese rose" refer not only to the traditional Chinese rose in China, but also to the modern hybrid Chinese rose (sometimes called "hybrid Chinese rose") which is made by crossing the traditional western Chinese rose and Chinese rose and sold by flower shops. "Rose": Rosa rugosa, a native spice plant in China, was originally abbreviated as "rugosa rose" in Chinese, or "Japanese Rose" in English.
