Odessa

Odessa is a city in the south of Ukraine, an important center of industry, transportation, culture, education and tourism, and the capital of Odessa Oblast. The city covers an area of 160 square kilometers, with a population of 1.06 million, and is the largest port city and center of industry, science, culture and tourism on the Black Sea coast. It is located near the mouth of the Dniester River flowing into the Black Sea. The city is divided into six districts with a population of 1.141 million. Odessa was founded in 1415 as a Tatar settlement called Kagibey, and was renamed Odessa in 1795; in 1805 it became the administrative center of Novorossiysk Krai.
