How to Cultivate Students' Cultural Awareness in English Teaching

1. Infiltrate cultural awareness from daily life

From the perspective of greetings, the traditional cultural habits of our country are quite different from those of English-speaking countries. In our culture, according to time and occasion, our greeting way is: Have you eaten? Busy? Where are you going? Wait, in the process of greeting, you usually don't pay attention to the content of the answer, just a friendly greeting. If we ignore the differences between cultures, it will cause great differences in communication between the two sides.

For the above phenomenon, teachers should encourage students to collect and observe more foreign cultural materials, such as pictures of architecture, life, newspapers, costumes, customs and festivals, and then have a "daily conversation" with students a few minutes before class. This method can not only broaden students' knowledge and enrich their cultural horizons, but also enhance students' sensitivity to culture, so that students can form cross-cultural awareness in a subtle way. In addition, in teaching, teachers should take the initiative to supplement the content of teaching materials and infiltrate cultural awareness. For example, cross-cultural lectures can organize students to visit exhibitions or organize cross-cultural activities or performances to help students form a systematic system of basic cultural knowledge.

2. Infiltrate culture and exchange consciousness with posture.

Although primary school students are very young, their thinking is still developing. Therefore, teachers should avoid psychological conflicts caused by indoctrination in teaching, but should systematically integrate the knowledge, attitude and ability of cultural education into English teaching, and penetrate into various cultural communication consciousness through appropriate body language when students unconsciously communicate across cultures. Body language here mainly includes: manner, posture and gestures. Proper use of body language in teaching can not only stimulate students' interest in learning, but also better master western culture. For example: Westerners are "O", which means "OK", and China's nod means "OK".

3. Actively organize cultural activities.

In festival cultural activities, students' participation will directly affect the process of cross-cultural communication; In the process of personally experiencing cross-cultural practice, cross-cultural ability and attitude are produced. In primary school English teaching, listening, speaking and singing contain the culture of English-speaking countries. By observing, watching and imitating gestures, gestures and facial expressions in various scenes, we can deeply understand language and culture.
