What are the preserved relief works of Babylonian art?
Due to various reasons, very few ancient Babylonian relief art works have been preserved. Judging from these works of art, the Babylonians did not create anything new. They only accepted the Sumerian-Akkadian tradition to a certain extent. "The Code of Hammurabi" can also be regarded as a relief art work. It is engraved on a black basalt stone pillar, more than 2 meters high, with reliefs on the upper part and text on the lower part. The relief depicts King Hammurabi standing before the sun god Shamash to receive the code of law. The majesty of the sun god is in powerful contrast with the humility of the king. The whole scene is full of religious piety and seriousness. There is another type of terracotta relief from this period. One of the most intact is a panel depicting the nude goddess Lilith with a lion and an owl supporting her.
