1. The nature of Chinese society began to undergo qualitative changes.

China gradually became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country. With the change of the main contradiction in the society, China gradually began the bourgeois democratic revolution against the empire and feudalism. Therefore, the Opium War became the starting point of China's modern history.

After the Opium War, with the invasion of foreign capitalist imperialism, independent China gradually became semi-colonial China, and feudal China gradually became semi-feudal China.

2. Destruction of China's sovereignty and customs sovereignty.

Britain and other Western powers had gained many privileges in China. If it kept Hong Kong Island, it undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It undermined China's sovereignty over its territorial waters; it undermined China's judicial and customs sovereignty.

On the other hand, the Western powers invaded China with the aim of turning it into their own colony. However, because China had been a united force for a long time, and especially because of the tenacious and sustained resistance of the Chinese people, and also because of the irreconcilable conflict between the imperialist powers vying for China, it was not possible for any one of them to conquer China alone, nor was it possible for them to carve up China together.

3. Class relations in Chinese society also underwent profound changes.

In the Chinese countryside, the feudal relations of production in which the landlords exploited the peasants still held a clear predominance in social and economic life. In this way, China's economy was neither completely feudal nor completely capitalist, but semi-colonial and semi-feudal.

4. The contradictions of China's modern semi-colonial and semi-feudal society present a complex situation.

Contradictions between the Chinese nation and foreigncapitalism-imperialism, between the peasants and the landlord class, between the bourgeoisie and the landlord class, between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie, between organizations and factions in the feudal ruling class, and between and among the imperialist powers in China, and so on.

The main main contradictions are between imperialism and the Chinese nation, and between feudalism and the masses. These two pairs of major contradictions and their struggles ran through the entire semi-colonial and semi-feudal society of China and played a decisive role in the development and change of modern Chinese society.

Under the double oppression of capitalist imperialism and feudalism (later bureaucratic capitalism), the vast majority of the people of China, especially the peasants, became poorer and poorer, more and more bankrupt, and lived a life of starvation, freezing, and without political rights.

5. The task of transforming the Chinese nation in modern times.

The struggle for national independence and people's liberation, and the realization of national strength and people's prosperity are the two major historical tasks facing the Chinese nation since modern times. They are both different and closely related.

The first task is to fundamentally overthrow the semi-colonial and semi-feudal ruling order and change the backward relations of production and superstructure. The latter task is to change modern China's backward position and status in economic and cultural terms, develop the productive forces and modernize China.

The first task clears the way and creates the necessary preconditions for the second; the latter is the ultimate goal and inevitable requirement of the former.
