Shenzhen Local Hakka Dialect

The local Hakka dialect of Shenzhen belongs to a branch of the westward extension of the Hakka language of the eastern part of Guangdong Province, represented by Longgang Hakka, which is mainly distributed in the northern, central-western and eastern parts of Shenzhen.In 1985, the population of Hakka speakers was about 140,000, which accounted for 56% of the total population of the whole county of Bao'an (today's Shenzhen City) at that time. The Hakka-speaking population of the original inhabitants of Shenzhen is about 200,000 (1994 census of 19 towns in Shenzhen).

The distribution of Hakka dialect in Shenzhen is in Longgang District, Longcheng Street, Longgang Street, Buji Street, Bantian Street, Nanwan Street, Jihua Street, Henggang Street, Yuanshan Street, Baolong Street, Pingdi Street, Kwai Chung Street, Dapeng Street, Nan'ao Street, Pinghu Street, *Mugu, Xinmu, and other villages; Pingshan District, Pingshan Street, Maeruan Street, Biling Street, Shijing Street, Kengzi Street, Longtian Street; Longhua Street, Guanlan Street, Minzhi Street, Dalang Street, Guanhu Street, Fucheng Street in Longhua District; Shatoujiao Street, Yantian Street, Yantian Street, Haishan Street, Meisha Street in Yantian District; Shiyan Street, Xixiang Street * Tiegang, Jiambei, Mabu, Fenggang and other villages of Bao'an District, Hangcheng Street * Huangmabu, Jiuwei, Hesu and other villages; Guangming District, Bright Street * White Flower Village, Yutang Street * Hongxing Village; Liantang Street, Donghu Street, Cuizhu Street, Dongxiao Street, Qingshuihe Street, Huangbei Street * Luofang Village in Luohu District; Meilin Street in Futian District; Shahe Street, Taoyuan Street, Xili Street, Nanshan District, Nantou Street * Tongle Village, Yuehai Street * Dachong Village, Shekou Street * Nanshuicun, and Merchants' Street * Shuiwan Village in Nanshan District (plus * means only some villages)

The 2012 edition of the Chinese Language Atlas (2nd Edition) Chinese Dialect Volume B1-17 divides the Shenzhen Hakka dialect into the Cantonese-Taiwanese piece, the Meihui sub-piece. Since there is a great deal of variation in the phonology of the Hakka dialects in Shenzhen, Henggang dialect, which is located in the center of the distribution of Hakka dialects, is chosen as a representative of the Shenzhen Hakka dialect in the Records of Shenzhen Municipality. There are 17 consonants*** (including zero consonants), 40 rhymes***, and 6 tones in the Shenzhen Hakka dialect. The area of Shenzhen Hakka dialect is estimated to be 1361.06 square kilometers, accounting for 68% of the city's area.
