Stories

In the history of painting and calligraphy in China, there are two people who have been crowned as "saints" by later generations: one is Wang Xizhi of the Jin Dynasty, who is known as the "Sage of Calligraphy"; and the other is known as the "Sage of Painting", who is known as the "Sage of Painting". The other is Wu Daozi, known as the "Saint of Painting".

Legend has it that once Wu Daozi came to Jizu Mountain (now in Dali City, Yunnan Province), the Golden Dome Temple accommodation, that night, he and Yuezhi Zen master drinking wine to the moon, talk very much. The Zen master had long heard of Wu Daozi's fame, and asked him to improvise a painting to commemorate the temple. Wu Daozi agreed. Zen master ordered the little monk to bring pen, ink, paper and ink stone, Wu Daozi lifted the pen, and soon drew a "standing horse picture", the horse drew vividly, just as he was ready to draw on the horse's tail, suddenly felt nausea in the chest, they put the brush aside, came to the courtyard to vomit up. After he vomited, he was assisted back to the Zen room and rested. The next day, Wu Daozi was in a hurry to go down the mountain, so he forgot to paint the horse.

After Wu Daozi left, the Zen master will be missing the tail of the horse "standing horse picture" hanging in the Zen hall, want to wait for the future Wu Daozi again, please ask him to make up the tail of the horse.

One day, a dozen or so farmers barged in from down the mountain and said angrily to the Zen master, "There is a bald-tailed pony that runs out of your temple every day to spoil our crops."

The Zen master was puzzled, and asked, "Buddhism is a place of tranquility, what horses can be raised? If you don't believe me, go to the temple and search."

The farmers searched and searched, and did not even see the shadow of the horse, but they clearly saw the horse ran to the temple. When they wondered if they had made a mistake, the Zen master remembered the painting and said to the farmers, "There is indeed no horse in my temple, but there is a picture with a horse on it, so please come in and look at it."

When the farmers looked at the horse on the painting, they pointed to it and said, "That's it, running down the mountain for days on end to steal our crops, and look at how many wheat seedlings it's holding in its mouth!"

The Zen master was furious and pointed at the bald-tailed horse on the painting and scolded, "Bastard, keep you to harm people, better to take it to the fire pond and burn it."

As soon as the words left his mouth, the horse on the painting knelt down. The farmers were amazed and felt it was a pity to burn it, so they said, "As long as it is sincerely repentant and no longer spoils the crops, it will be fine."

After that, a bald-tailed horse was seen often coming down from Jizhu Mountain to help the crop farmers. It was the bald-tailed divine horse painted by Wu Daozi.
