China is rich in straw resources. What are the benefits of raising cattle with straw?

Feeding cattle with straw is the most traditional way of raising cattle, and it is also one of the most economical, practical and cost-effective breeding methods. Especially in winter when green feed is scarce, farmers in southern rice producing areas generally feed cattle with straw. So what are the benefits of raising cattle with straw?

First, choose straw to feed cattle.

Straw for cattle, try to choose straw with many leaves, yellow-green color and soft texture. Straw must not contain foreign matter, such as silt, plastic, metal and feathers. Put an end to the use of straw contaminated by pesticides and moldy.

Second, mow the grass.

Straw for cattle needs to be processed into small pieces 3-4 cm long, which is convenient for cattle to eat and can also avoid waste. Straw for cattle should be alkalized or ammoniated in advance.

3. Alkalization, ammoniation and salinization of rice straw

① Straw alkalization treatment: put the cut straw into a vat or cement pool and soak it in 3% slaked lime water. The soaking time is 24 hours, and the soaked straw can be used to feed cattle after being fished out and drained.

② Ammonification treatment of rice straw: put the cut rice straw into a cylinder or cement pool and soak it in 3% ammonia water or 7% urea solution. The soaking time is 7- 10 day, and the soaked straw can be used to feed cattle after being taken out and dried.

③ Salinization of rice straw: add 0.6- 1 kg salt and 150 kg warm water to every 100 kg of rice straw, fully mix them evenly, and then put them into a cement pool for compaction. Usually it only takes about a day to ferment, and it can be used to feed cattle.

Fourth, supplement nutrition.

Straw is a coarse grain with high cellulose content and low nutritional value. A single straw cannot meet the nutritional needs of cattle. Therefore, when feeding straw to cattle, we should properly mix some concentrate with high calcium and protein content, such as broken bean cake, corn, sorghum and so on. And add appropriate calcium powder and bone powder to help cattle digest. Wheat bran contains too much phosphorus, so feed less or no wheat bran, especially wheat bran. If you feed a lot of wheat bran for a long time, it is easy to destroy the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body, resulting in decalcification and softening of bones, which can cause paralysis in severe cases.

Verb (abbreviation of verb) Matters needing attention in feeding cattle with straw

Because the nutritional content of straw is not high, it can't be fed with a single straw. Even if cows reach the maximum intake, they can't meet their nutritional needs. Therefore, in the case of feeding dry straw, it is necessary to feed a certain amount of silage and concentrated feed containing more protein. Concentrated feed is mainly composed of bean cake, corn and sorghum. Too much bran and bran is not allowed. When feeding cattle with straw, we should pay attention to regular and quantitative, divided into several times, reasonable mixing and sufficient water supply.
