A little feeling

Ding Cong (former director of Comic Art Committee of China Artists Association) met Zhang Bin in 1980s, because his paintings were scattered in newspapers and magazines, and his impression was limited to a cartoon recruit. In the mid-1990s, he and his colleagues from Heilongjiang Daily came to my home for an interview, but they were only casual acquaintances. Until 1999, Zhang Bin organized a cross-strait comic contest, and a group of Taiwanese cartoonists and mainland cartoonists went to Harbin for exchanges. I also went there. After seeing him running before and after, he was full of energy and thoughtful, and began to have a good impression on this young man. That time in Harbin for many days, Zhang Bin accompanied us all the way, and everyone had a meeting and sightseeing together, which made us know each other better. Later, he sent me a newly published album and found that he not only painted a lot but also painted well. Generally speaking, too many paintings tend to be rough, but Zhang Bin is different. He is free from vulgarity, not only drawing well, but also conceiving well.

I have an opinion on the current comics. Although it is very prosperous, all newspapers and magazines have comic editions and there are many new authors, but the overall level is not very high. It seems that as long as a cartoon has a good idea, it will be completed (of course, this is also very important), so the picture is often sloppy. You know, comics are also paintings. Without exquisite pictures, it is difficult to impress readers and make good paintings. And Zhang Bin has done a good job in this respect. As far as I know, Zhang Bin has published more than 4,000 cartoons and many books. His works have won the first prize of China News Award, chinese comic Golden Monkey Award and dozens of national awards at or above the provincial level. His cartoons have won many awards in international cartoon competitions held in Japan, South Korea and Turkey. So I often joke that he is an "award-winning professional". Before being transferred to Guangzhou Daily, Zhang Bin was not a professional painter, but a senior editor of Heilongjiang Daily. He edited two illustrated magazines, Comics Jingwei and Urban Comics. Zhang Bin and I are colleagues. He draws cartoons, I write words, and we live in different rooms in the same building. He hasn't transferred to Heilongjiang Daily for a long time. I often look at his works through the door and get mostly superficial knowledge.

But the impression is still very clear. First of all, he published many works. According to rough records, in the past two years alone, he has published more than 400 paintings in domestic newspapers and periodicals.

Second, there are many award-winning works. Nationwide, such as "After the Title" 1988 won the third prize of national good news; "Energy-saving Aircraft" won the humor award of the first national modern humor exhibition; Inside China won the Excellent Works of Irony and Humor Award1990; Tide won the chinese comic Golden Monkey Award. Plus local and professional awards, * * * has been forty times. Thirdly, Zhang Bin's cartoons are easy to recognize. Most of the characters in his works are pudgy figures, shiny backs, pointed shoes, exaggerated expressions and backgrounds (props). You can recognize Zhang Bin's paintings at a glance without looking at their names. Many works and awards show that he is diligent in cultivation, rigorous in creative attitude and quite high in quality. It's not that radishes don't wash fast. Zhang Bin's father and cousin both study architecture and are related to painting. My cousin Zhang Qinzhe, in particular, loves comics and has made great achievements. Near Zhu Zhechi, Zhang Bin also likes painting since childhood. Engaged in oil painting, printmaking and gouache amateur creation for more than ten years. He didn't go to art school and knew that his basic skills of modeling and sketching were not solid. But he likes philosophy, loves to observe, is willing to ponder, and has the ability to tell jokes in a sullen way, making heavy work easier. In addition, due to the environmental constraints at that time and the needs of his mass cultural work, he chose to become attached to comics.

It's not easy to attack cartoons. Zhang Bin said that he admired the style and skills of our country's cartoon predecessors, as well as those works that looked simple, free and easy and vivid. But for me who have never studied China's painting and calligraphy and are not familiar with the brush, it is very difficult to learn. It is Yang Ji's skill to draw well with a pen and carve carefully. For this reason, his cartoons are all sketched with pens, supplemented by shading, similar to copperplate prints; The picture has feelings (plot), scenery (background) and dialogue. This seems to go against the old adage "Simplify the Sanqiu Tree by deleting complexity". Investigate its origin, the brush is not easy to use, on the one hand. On the other hand, I think it may be related to the content it deliberately expresses. He also draws romantic paintings and humorous paintings, and draws more world cartoons with real life as the content, telling right and wrong, writing likes and dislikes, and sending love and hate. The main idea of painting requires that the expression and techniques must be clear and smooth, so that people can understand it at a glance. Even if it is implicit and suggestive, it can't make people guess riddles and read empty poems. In order to avoid his own shortcomings, Zhang Bin found another way with a pen, mobilized the background, dialogue and other means, and adopted the form of multiple pictures. These may not only be Sanqiu trees from a simple point of view, but also help to express the specific content, so that readers can recognize Zhang Bin's at a glance. In this sense, it can be regarded as a new February flower. Zhang Bin's world cartoons have a wide range of subjects. Almost all aspects of social life; The main theme is to criticize the disadvantages of the times and strengthen the body to eliminate evil. Without profound insight and analytical ability and high expressive force, it is difficult to make life nutrients into artistic treasures. Zhang is good at observing, extracting typical realistic themes from seemingly trivial life, and appealing to pictures through unique ideas. Many of his paintings are multiple, that is, several plots are selected to express a theme, which shows his skill in refining life. For example, Taboo caught the deep scars of several typical professionals and satirized and teased them. Curiously, teachers are taboo because they love face, while others are afraid of exposure because they are humble or disobedient. People often refer to comics as prose of images. This is not only because they are similar in appearance-short and pithy, but also in skills: they can be used to praise or criticize, satirize, inspire or delight. To the enemy, it is like a dagger and a spear, but to myself, it is a flower with thorns. But as the foundation of its establishment, it is mainly ironic, critical or combative. When talking about the social function of essays, Mr. Lu Xun emphasized that essays should be daggers and spears, and should be sensory nerves and offensive and defensive hands and feet. Oppose using essays as knickknacks for literati to play with. It can also give people pleasure and rest, but this pleasure and rest should be rest and preparation before work and battle. So should comics. Of course, it is no longer Lu Xun's era, and it may not be of much use in the future struggle against the enemy; However, among the people, due to various violations of law and discipline, unhealthy tendencies, ignorance and backwardness in thinking, and the influence of old customs, our cause will often be destroyed and people's hearts will be divided. These dark corners in the sun make people get warning, exhortation and enlightenment when they laugh, and comics are of great use.

In fact, paying attention to the fighting function of cartoons is a fine tradition of chinese comic's creation. It is sometimes a good tradition for China newspapers to rely on cartoons to induce nerves and attack and defend hands and feet. These two traditions are well reflected in Zhang Bin's works and creations. As a cartoonist, he pays attention to national affairs and devotes himself to social progress with his own creation. As mentioned above, he is Art editor of Heilongjiang Daily, and he proposed to set up a special page of "Comic Jingwei" to contact the authors extensively and organize comic activities, which can be said to spare no effort.

Perhaps it is for this reason that his work, creation and personal education have always been concerned and rewarded by famous cartoonists such as Hua, Fang Cheng and so on. In a letter to Zhang Bin, Hua Lao earnestly warned him to form the habit of reading. He should read everything about politics, history, culture and art, but first of all, he should read politics, so as to improve his ability to analyze complex things and make cartoons divorced from reality and thoughtful. Zhang Bin has just entered the age of no doubt, and his creative time is only ten years. It is commendable to have such achievements. However, art is endless. How to better realize the unity of profundity of thought, accuracy of expression and moderation of measurement is a problem that everyone keeps thinking about, and Zhang Bin is no exception. We must also have the spirit of being willing to marry and supporting future generations, unite the broad masses of like-minded people, and prosper the comic book industry. It's not easy.
