Who does teaching learn from?
Idioms and their stories
Xia Zi was an outstanding student in the later period of Confucius. He was quick-witted, poor when he was young, studied hard and became an official. He used to be the father of Lu. Xia Zi is very clever. After the death of Confucius, Xia Zi came to the Xihe River in Wei State (now Hejin, Shanxi Province) to give lectures and taught 300 students. At that time, the celebrities Wuqi, Tianzifang, Li Kui, Duan Ganmu and Gong Yanggao were all his students. Even Wei Wenhou "consulted" Xia Zi and regarded him as a teacher.
When studying with Confucius, Xia Zi once asked Confucius what he meant by "Qiao Qian Xi, beautiful eyes looking forward to Xi, always thinking of gorgeous Xi". Confucius replied, "That is to say, you have a white background first, and then you draw." Xia Zi asked again, "So, did rites and music come into being after benevolence and righteousness?" Confucius was very happy and replied, "Shang Bo, you are really my role model.
Xia Zi, a wise man, learned from Confucius that "different people have different opinions", which in turn further inspired Confucius, so Confucius was very happy and thought that he could discuss the Book of Songs with Xia Zi.
Idiom implication
Like Confucius, erudition is not omniscient. In the process of educating students, he is sometimes inspired by students to further enrich his knowledge. This is what teaching and learning learn from each other, and the ancients knew it for a long time. This reflects a universal truth: everything in the objective world is interrelated and interdependent. While giving others knowledge, they will also improve themselves. It's like helping out and benefiting yourself.
