I. Introduction to Carnival
Carnival is usually a feast and carnival before Lent. At first, it was extended from the priest to the day before Lent. Now it is usually limited to a few days before Lent, and it is popular in Europe and America. Many countries have traditional carnival. Masquerade balls, float parades, masks and banquets are the main features of carnival, which originated from non-Christian festivals, such as bacchanalia, Saturnalia and Fauna Festival in ancient Rome, and Celtic religious ceremonies. It is usually held in February and March.
Second, the origin of carnival
(1) Many countries in the world have carnivals. This festival originated in medieval Europe. The Goddess of Wood Festival in ancient Greece and Rome and bacchanalia are its predecessors. This festival was once closely related to Easter. There is a 40-day Lent before Easter, during which people are forbidden to entertain, fast meat, reflect and repent, in memory of Jesus who suffered three days before Easter. So in the first three days of Lent, people will hold banquets, dances and parades to indulge in joy, so it is called "Carnival".
(2) People in Europe and South America celebrate Carnival. However, the dates of festivals are different in different places. Generally speaking, most countries hold celebrations in the middle and late February. Carnival in different countries has its own characteristics, but on the whole, it is famous for unrestrained drinking and having fun, the most famous of which is the Brazilian Carnival. It is generally believed that carnival originated from the ceremony of the ancient Romans and Greeks welcoming the Spring Festival.
