Body:

I felt at the beginning of the study of the "Discipleship Rules" boring, I thought: do we still learn the ancient people kneeling to and fro? However, after the teacher's explanation and the enthusiasm of my classmates later, I was infected and joined in learning to recite the Disciple's Rules. In "Discipleship Rules", my favorite is the content of "faith", which tells how a person should be honest and trustworthy.

"Whenever words are spoken, faith is the first thing to go, and fraud and delusion are the second." Meaning: Where words are spoken, honesty comes first; how can that be when one defrauds others or speaks nonsense? Honesty is a virtue, only have want, honest people, can have a happy life. There is another saying: "When you hear of anger, you hear of honor; when you hear of goodwill, you hear of happiness; when you hear of bad friends, you hear of good friends. The goodwill and fear, the goodwill and happiness, the straight and understanding, and gradually close to each other."

It means that if a person gets angry when he hears others talk about his own shortcomings, and rejoices when he hears others praise him, then bad friends will come close to you, and truly good friends will gradually drift away. On the contrary, those virtuous people who are upright and honest will gradually become good friends and get close to you.

Yan Shu, a lyricist of the Northern Song Dynasty, was known for his honesty. When he was fourteen years old, someone recommended him to the emperor as a prodigy. The emperor summoned him and asked him to take the examination at the same time as more than 1,000 jinshi.

As a result, Yanshu realized that the exam was one he had just practiced ten days before, so he truthfully reported it to Emperor Zhenzong and asked for a change to another topic. Song Zhenzong appreciated Yan Shu's honesty so much that he gave him the title of "scholar of the same grade". When Yan Shu was in office, the world was at peace.

The officials in the capital often traveled to the countryside or held banquets in the city's restaurants and teahouses. Yanshu's family was so poor that he could not afford to go out to eat, drink or play, so he had to read and write with his brothers at home. One day, Emperor Zhenzong promoted Yan Shu to be the East Palace official who assisted the crown prince in his studies. The ministers were surprised and did not understand why the emperor made such a decision.

Zhenzong said, "Recently, the ministers have been having a lot of fun and banquets, but Yan Shu is the only one who reads books behind closed doors and is so self-respecting and prudent, he is the right person to be an official of the East Palace." After thanking for his kindness, Yan Shu said, "Actually, I'm also a person who likes to have fun and banquets, just that my family is poor. If I had money, I would have participated in the feast." These two incidents helped Yanshu establish his credibility in front of his ministers, and Song Zhenzong trusted him even more.

Students, isn't the story of Yanshu an example we should all learn from? Isn't this the kind of spirit we are missing?
