During the Tang and Song Dynasties, China's thought experienced a great change. To put it simply, during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, metaphysics (the continuation of Zhuang Lao's thought) and Buddhism (Hinayana Buddhism) which advocated birth flourished, and finally merged into Zen Buddhism which prevailed in the Tang Dynasty; In the Song Dynasty, because of the decline of five dynasties and ten countries, the world expected the arrival of the Lord, so Confucianism rose again, absorbed Zen thoughts, and finally formed Zhu Cheng Neo-Confucianism, which influenced the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. In a word, Buddhism occupied a distinct position in the social politics of the Tang and Song Dynasties. From emperors to literati, they often study Buddhist scriptures and make friends with eminent monks.

Su Dongpo wrote a notebook called Dongpo Zhi Lin. One of the poems says, "At the beginning of the day, the sky is in the sky and the light is shining; Eight winds can't blow, sit on the purple lotus. " Su Dongpo gloated in this poem, feeling that he had reached the state of "eight winds did not move" and would not be disturbed by any secular things. So he sent this poem to his friend monk Yuan (named him "Zen Master", perhaps more famous) and asked him to comment. After reading it, Yuan wrote the word "fart" under the poem.

Of course, Su Dongpo was very angry and went to Yuanlun by boat: "Master, if you don't praise my high level, forget it." Why curse people? " Yuan smiled and said, "Didn't you call yourself' Eight winds can't blow'?" Why do you fly into a rage when I just wrote the word' fart'? "

Eight winds remain motionless, that is to say, the success or failure of any external honor or disgrace can not affect a person's state of mind.
