Drama

Drama is a form of theater that focuses on dialogue and came to China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In contrast to traditional stage plays and operas, the main narrative device in a drama is unaccompanied dialogue or monologue by actors on stage, although a small amount of music and singing may be used.

Drama is a comprehensive art, with scriptwriting, directing, acting, choreography, lighting, and criticism all essential. None of the traditional Chinese plays are dramas, and some traditional Western plays such as the ancient Greek plays are not considered strictly dramas because of their extensive use of song teams. Modern Western stage plays such as musicals, operas, etc. are generally dramas.
