Theoretical guidance of clinical pharmacology: clinical application and adverse reactions of sodium valproate

I. Clinical application of sodium valproate

Sodium valproate is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug, which has certain curative effect on various types of epilepsy in clinic.

The curative effect on grand mal is not as good as carbamazepine, phenytoin sodium and phenobarbital collected by Medical Education Network. But when the above drugs are ineffective, this drug is still effective.

The curative effect on mild attack is better than ethosuximide, but it is generally not the first choice because of its hepatotoxicity.

The curative effect on psychomotor attack is similar to that of carbamazepine.

Second, the adverse reactions of sodium valproate

Generally, the adverse reactions are mild. Common nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite can be relieved by taking it after meals or gradually increasing the amount.

Central nervous system reactions are mainly manifested as drowsiness, imbalance, fatigue, inattention, anxiety and tremor, but these adverse reactions are rare and can be alleviated by reducing the dosage.

The serious toxicity is liver function damage. About 25% patients have abnormal liver function after taking medicine for a few days, especially in the first few months after taking medicine. Liver function should be checked regularly during taking medicine.

Pregnant women should use it with caution.
