Why are the statues of Guan Yu carved by later generations mostly closed?

Many military commanders emerged during the Three Kingdoms period, but Guan Yu was the most popular and famous. Guan Yu is the head of Liu Bei's Five Tigers, guarding Jingzhou, which is a great shock to China.

Guan Yu's loyalty and righteousness are extraordinary, and his martial arts are high. Martial arts practitioners call him a warrior sage. After Guan Yu's death, people called him "the door god" and "the god of wealth", which shows his position in people's hearts.

To commemorate, many people will put a statue of Master Guan at home to show their worship.

However, the statue of Guan Yu has one feature. Although Mr. Guan is a handsome man, his eyes are always closed.

Why is this? What do you think of Guan Yu with his eyes closed?

Guan Yu was a fugitive before he became sworn with Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. He makes a living by doing business. After becoming sworn, he beheaded Yan Liang and punished Wen Chou, and stood firm in majesty. Guan Yu, as a leading figure, has high martial arts and kills countless people.

Then why are Guan Yu's sculptures all with a long knife in one hand and his eyes closed in the other? This is the legend of folk metaphysics.

Metaphysics says that when Guan Yu opens his eyes, something great will happen, and his life will be in danger, so people close their eyes and worship Guan Yu.

Guan Yu has killed so many people, and there are countless ghosts around him. Naturally, there is a strong resentment around him. In addition, Guan Yu accidentally lost Jingzhou and died in Maicheng. He was wronged when he died. When two kinds of grievances are added together, they will have very serious consequences.

Later carpenters who carved the statue of Guan Yu had a rule that they just couldn't carve Guan Yu's eyes. Guan Yu didn't open his eyes, so Guan Yu wouldn't appear, and his idea of killing people wouldn't be brought back to earth. In addition, it can make Guan Yu's soul offset other ghosts and murder evil thoughts, and it is impossible to enter reincarnation.

If you carve Guan Gong's eyes, he will come back to life, so he must wander around the world and take revenge on his enemies, which will kill people and bring misfortune and bloodshed!

Another legend goes like this:

Guan Yu's ghost once wandered around the world, looking for his enemies to take revenge, during which he met a powerful mage.

The mage was not afraid of Guan Yu's desire to kill. On the contrary, he felt sorry for this stubborn warrior, so the mage said to Guan Yu's residual soul: If you want to enter reincarnation and return to the world, you can only put down your hatred, close your eyes and concentrate on restraining your desire to kill. Only in this way can you go to hell and be reincarnated as an adult when you enter reincarnation, otherwise this remnant soul will dissipate sooner or later and become the energy between heaven and earth.

Guan Yu was also a sensible man before his death. After listening to the master's words, Guan Yu decided to close his eyes and concentrate on suppressing the idea of killing people, hoping to leave as soon as possible and enter the cycle of hell.

For the above reasons, most of Guan Yu's sculptures are closed.

If there are statues of Guan Yu with eyes open on the market, they are all carved by novice artists or laymen without master inheritance.

No matter whether the legend is true or not, sculptors are willing to believe that the original intention of this legend is to protect people from harm, so they all carve Guan Yu with their eyes closed.
