Introduction to Gadamer
Gadamer sees aesthetics as part of philosophical hermeneutics, arguing that art reveals our existence, and that art and beauty are a fundamental way of being; that the experience of art transcends the methods of the natural sciences, and is close to philosophical and historical experience, and thus becomes a point of departure for hermeneutics, and that at the same time, every work of art should be understood, and that the understanding is an ontological existence of the whole world; that aesthetic experience and the artistic experience of understanding are characterized by a certain hermeneutic phenomenon. In short, Gadamer elevates aesthetic experience to the level of philosophy, and aesthetics becomes an organic part of hermeneutics.
Gadamer analyzes in detail the completion of the process of aesthetic understanding, summarizes the distinctive historical features of aesthetic understanding, and through the means of "anticipation of meaning" he solves the problem of hermeneutic cycle. The "hermeneutic cycle" mainly includes the cycle of the whole and the part, the cycle of history and the cycle of this paper, which is the reflection of the contradictory opposites in the aesthetic understanding.
Gadamer also emphasizes the linguistic nature of aesthetic understanding, the basic mode of aesthetic understanding is dialogue and question and answer, the dialogue between the aesthetic subject and the art of this paper creates **** the same language.
Gadamer's exploration of the nature of art is from an ontological perspective, the nature of the work of art is temporal, random, and is the specific meaning of that work in a specific environment for a specific aesthetic subject to generate. His view that art is integrated with human existence and self-understanding; that art as a game opens up a world of freedom; that the constant openness of art makes the question of the relationship between art and reality more prominent, and that art is above reality without being detached from it, is justified.
Gadamer's aesthetic thought directly inspired the theory of receptive aesthetics and the theory of reader-response criticism
