On Tang Hua's Creation

Author/Chu Yunqi

One day after school, my mother drove me home. When I passed Dongjianong Pedestrian Street, I saw a Tang Hua seller on the street at a glance, so I said to my mother, "I really want to buy a Tang Hua." As I talked, my mouth watered.

Mom stopped the car and took me to sell Tang Hua's booth. Tang Hua was inserted on a small bamboo stick with flying birds, jumping rabbits, cute little fish, cocky tails and red peaches ... all lifelike. I was attracted by a big phoenix, so I said to my mother, "I want to buy a phoenix." Mother asked Mr Tang Hua to make one for me now.

I witnessed the whole process of production. First, the master scooped up half a spoonful of syrup with a spoon, put the bottom of the spoon on a flat and clean slate, and drew three thick and thin lines. Then, the spoon tilted slightly, pulled out thin sugar filaments, and drew a beautiful phoenix head. Then, squeeze a little red syrup in the spoon, draw the red wings of the phoenix, and then draw the thick and long tail feathers of the phoenix round and round. Finally, he took a long thin bamboo stick and stuck it on the phoenix. Then he carefully took it off with a knife, and a phoenix was made, which looked like a real one. I looked around in my hand, not to mention how happy I was.

Tang Hua is a traditional art of the Chinese nation. I have seen it in some old movies, but I didn't expect to see it in real life today. It really excites me!

Let the knowledge be more.

Tang Hua, as its name implies, is a painting made of sugar and also made of tanghua. It is quite edible. Commonly known as "sugar pourer", "sugar cake" and "sugar lamp shadow".

According to legend, Chen Ziang, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, liked to eat yellow sugar (sucrose) when he was in his hometown of Sichuan, but he ate it in a different way: first, he melted the sugar, poured it on a clean and smooth table, made various patterns of small animals or flowers, held it in his hand after solidification, enjoyed it while eating, and consciously refined it. This is the origin of the legendary tanghua.
