Expanded Information
The tradition of using red and green continued into the 14th century, when the two colors were used to paint medieval altar screens. Dr. Spike Bucklow, a scientist and researcher from the University of Cambridge, said the so-called altar screens were usually installed in churches to separate people coming to pray from the priest and the altar.
He believes that altar screens constructed a physical separation that led the Victorians to associate the colors red and green with a sense of boundaries. The red and green color scheme appears at Christmas to signify the end of the old year and the beginning of the new.
