What is Ejiao made of?
Traditional boiled donkey-hide gelatin requires 12 processes, namely, skin selection, skin soaking, skin washing, hair scraping, skin cutting, skin washing, defoaming and impurity removal, concentration, gel freezing, gel cutting, gel drying and gel wiping.
The earliest raw material of Ejiao is cowhide, called yellow gelatin. Its function is similar to that of Ejiao, but its effect is secondary, while "Ejiao" made of horse skin has the opposite effect. Once horse skin is used, it is likely to cause miscarriage.
The first edition of People's Republic of China (PRC) Pharmacopoeia (20 15 edition) states that Ejiao is a glue stick made of dried or fresh skin of Equus donkeys by decocting and concentrating.
Ejiao is flat in nature and sweet in taste, and belongs to lung, liver and kidney meridians.
