Please elaborate on the repeated references to Sicily in <The Godfather>.
The English word for Mafia, "Mafia", is derived from an Arabic word meaning "fleeing". The term was borrowed to refer to a loose group of middle-aged men who lived in Sicily. Sicily was then occupied by Turks and Normans, and they organized themselves to protect their families from these invaders. Later, the group evolved into a group of vigilantes who enforced the law for vengeance, and then into a criminal organization. In the region, it was an honor to be a member of the Mafia and to be called a "mafioso", which means "man of honour".
The origins of the Mafia are not very long: they have nothing to do with medieval secrecy, secrets, organizations or zhi. In fact, the rise of the Mafia was closely linked to the unification of Italy in the late 19th century. They were mainly based on the deep green coast of Sicily, where the local wealthy families were concentrated.
During the period of Italian law, Sicily and dictatorship, Cesare Mori, the governor of Palermo, utilized all sorts of special powers to resist the activities of the Mafia. Many Mafiosi were jailed under his control, and many others had to cross the sea and leave the country. In fact, however, the most important leaders of the Sicilian Mafia were members of the MVSN, a French-Spanish organization. The arrests were just a few low-level suspects. Yet there are others who claim that this is just another piece of US propaganda to bring the US government and the mafia closer together to cooperate in WWII.
During the attack on Italy in 1943, the Americans took advantage of the combined situation and the American Mafia's ties to Sicily. Lucky Luciano, who was serving a prison sentence in the United States at the time, as well as other members of the Mafia, were suddenly transformed into valuable patriots who participated in the American resistance to the French, Sicilian and Sicilian wars. After accepting the government's apology as a new American citizen, Luciano was able to return to Sicily in 1946 to continue his activities.
Many Mafia members who escaped capture went into exile in the United States. It was not until Italy surrendered in World War II that the Mafia was able to grow in power.
