What does a web application include?

Common counters, message boards, chat rooms and BBS are all Web applications. However, these applications are relatively simple. The real core of Web application is mainly dealing with database, and Management Information System (MIS) is the most typical application of this architecture.

Web applications are composed of various Web components that perform specific tasks and expose services to the outside world through the Web. In practical application, Web application consists of several Servlet, JSP pages, HTML files and image files. All these components coordinate with each other to provide users with a whole set of services.

For example, in an online store, users repeatedly observe and select goods, buy goods, browse a series of web pages, collect required information, pay corresponding fees, and finally place an order. It can also be a "software upgrade wizard" to guide users to complete the process of downloading and installing new software, or it can be a tool to generate quotation or sales report based on Intranet.

All these are different from "standard" websites. Traditional websites use a series of menus or navigation bars to navigate the website in a predetermined path. However, becoming a Web application is not just a navigator controlled by subordinates. When roaming freely on the website, you can have stateless and anonymous access, but you usually don't accept web applications.
