English introduction of Portuguese egg tart

Egg tart is a kind of egg tart cake which is common in Hong Kong and other Asian countries. It consists of an outer pastry crust filled with custard and baked.

history

Egg tarts were introduced to Hong Kong by tea people in A.D. 1940. Then they are introduced to western cafes and bakeries to compete with dim sum restaurants, especially dim sum. [2] During the economic boom of1950s and1960s, Lu Yu Teahouse took the lead in launching mini egg tarts. [2] Ironically, mini-egg tarts are now a common snack, and they are more abundant than those provided by bakeries.

There is a theory that Hong Kong egg tarts are copies of English egg tarts. Compared with other parts of China, Guangdong has more frequent contacts with the West, especially Britain. As a former British colony, Hong Kong has adopted some British cuisines. Another theory holds that egg tarts evolved from very similar Portuguese egg tarts, called pastel de nata, and spread to Hong Kong through the Portuguese colony of Macau.
