Guanyin Christmas is: the 19th day of the 2nd lunar month.
Guan Yin's Christmas Day is the 19th day of the second month of the lunar calendar, which is considered to be the birthday of the Goddess of Mercy. On this day, Buddhist monasteries hold grand pujas to celebrate the birthday of the Goddess of Mercy and take this opportunity to promote her spirit of compassion and her wish to save suffering.
Guanyin, also known as Guanyin, is one of the four great bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism, representing compassion and wisdom. She is usually depicted holding a purifying vase and a willow branch, symbolizing the wish to save suffering and purify the human heart.
In Buddhism, Guanyin, the Bodhisattva, is regarded as a symbol of saving suffering and her wishful thinking and spirit of compassion are revered and worshipped by the majority of believers. Therefore, Guanyin's Christmas Day has also become an important Buddhist festival on which people express their admiration and gratitude to the Goddess of Mercy by chanting Buddha's name, reciting sutras and eating vegetarian food.
Origin of Guanyin Christmas:
Guanyin Christmas is one of the traditional Buddhist festivals in China, which celebrates the birthday of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva. According to Buddhist classics, Guanyin is the co-conspirator of Amitabha Buddha, with a vast compassionate heart, capable of saving suffering and universalizing all sentient beings. Therefore, Guanyin's Christmas is regarded as one of the important festivals for Buddhist followers.
In Chinese folklore, the origin of Guanyin Christmas can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty period. At that time, Buddhism was widely spread and developed in China, and the belief in the Goddess of Mercy gradually took root.
According to legend, the mother of Tang Emperor Tang Xuanzong, the Empress Dowager of the Holy Mother of God, had been blessed by the Goddess of Mercy in a dream, and was therefore very devout in her beliefs. In honor of the Empress Dowager's dream, Emperor Tang Xuanzong ordered that the Guanyin Christmas be celebrated on the 19th day of the second month of the lunar calendar every year.
Over time, Guanyin Christmas gradually became a national Buddhist festival. On this day, Buddhist believers will hold various celebrations, such as chanting sutras, worshipping Buddha and releasing animals to express their respect and gratitude to the Goddess of Mercy. In addition, some temples will also open the Guanyin Hall on this day for believers to come and burn incense and pray for peace and health, family happiness, career success and so on.
