This book sorts out and illuminates the greatness of the English novel tradition, starting with the "few true greats" in the history of the English novel, in order to "awaken a proper sense of difference", by which is meant "those important novelists who are comparable to the great poets-who have transformed not only the potential of art for their peers and readers, but also the sense of humanity that they have fostered. The so-called great novelists, "are those important novelists who can be compared with the great poets - those who not only transformed the potential of art for their peers and readers, but were also important in terms of the sense of humanity they fostered - the sense of the potential of life.
