The story of the old Hangzhou city wall
The earliest record of building city walls in Hangzhou began in the Sui Dynasty.
In the ninth year of Emperor Kai of Sui Dynasty (AD 589), Qiantang County was changed to Hangzhou. Two years later, Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty began to build the wall of Hangzhou, with Yanqiao River in the east, West Lake in the west, Phoenix Mountain in the south and Qiantang Gate in the north.
During the Five Dynasties, Hangzhou, the capital of Wu Yue State, was "the wealth of the southeast". Therefore, the then monarch Qian Liu built a large-scale city wall, reaching Pagoda of Six Harmonies in the south, Donghe in the east, Wulinmen in the north and Leifeng Tower in the west. The city is waist-drum-shaped, with a circumference of 70 miles and ten gates.
Lin 'an City in the Southern Song Dynasty became the political, economic and cultural center of the whole country at that time.
1 158, Song Gaozong extended the southeast wall of Hangzhou by about 40 meters. As a result, the outline of Lin 'an City was formed-across Wu Shan in the south, Wulinmen in the north, Qiantang River in the southeast and West Lake in the west. The urban area is about 14 miles long from north to south and about 5 miles wide from east to west. It is not a big city.
With the invasion of Yuan soldiers, Lin 'an was looted unprecedentedly. The rulers of the Yuan Dynasty forced all localities to tear down the city walls, and the city walls of Hangzhou also collapsed at this time. Those walls that have not been completely leveled have gradually evolved into place names-Jinjiling now, in fact, was called Gyeonggi Ridge at that time, which means the foundation of Beijing; And Chengtou Lane is the original alley next to Chengtou.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhang Shicheng, the leader of the peasant uprising, rebuilt the city wall, extended the east wall by 3 meters, and moved it from the present Dong Qing Lane to the present Huancheng East Road. At that time, the moat was Tiesha River.
